Matt Elam joins select club: Palm Beach County NFL Draft first-rounders

Matt Elam was hanging out at Dwyer High on Thursday, watching a regional track meet. His former football coach, Jack Daniels, said Elam left around 7 p.m. He went home to Riviera Beach to watch the NFL Draft with family and friends.

Once Daniels got home that night, he watched the draft until the 26th pick — he fell asleep. Early the next morning, he awoke to news that would make any coach proud.

Tyrann Mathieu, weighing his NFL future, stops by Atlantic High football practice

The elusive Honey Badger has been spotted in Delray Beach.

Tyrann Mathieu, the embattled former LSU cornerback and 2011 Heisman Trophy finalist, stopped by Atlantic High on Thursday to talk to the school’s football team.

Mathieu, 20, was dismissed from LSU in August after failing multiple drug tests. He returned to school as a student, but was arrested Oct. 25 on charges of marijuana possession.

USA Football study: Lake Worth, Pahokee two of 2012 NFL Draft’s top producers

Seven former PB County high school players selected in 2012 NFL Draft

In three terrific seasons at Virginia Tech, Jayron Hosley didn’t have too many missteps. In 2010, the former Atlantic High standout led the nation with nine interceptions and earned a reputation as one of college football’s best cover cornerbacks.

But a failed drug test at the NFL Combine in February could have derailed Hosley’s NFL career before it started. According to a published report, Hosley, who left Virginia Tech following his junior season, wrote to NFL teams apologizing after testing positive for marijuana.

Glades Central grad Travis Benjamin taken in fourth round by Cleveland Browns

The Cleveland Browns finally addressed their wide receiver depth in the fourth round, selecting speedster Travis Benjamin from Miami with the 100th pick in the NFL draft.

The Browns needed a wideout to stretch defenses, and Benjamin has been timed in 4.34 seconds in the 40-yard dash. The 5-foot-10 Glades Central grad had 41 catches and three touchdowns last season for the Hurricanes.
