Let’s call the 2010 Glades Day Gators the Cardiac Kids. I know it’s cliche. I know that nickname is taken. But I also know that I genuinely feared for the heart health of Glades Day’s fans and coaching staff during Friday’s exhilarating Class 1B championship between Glades Day and South Daytona-Warner Christian.

Doctors told Glades Day quarterback Tanner Redish (broken left collarbone) on Monday that he will need two months to recover from the injury he suffered Friday night against King’s Academy. Meanwhile, two-way star J.T. Thornton told the Post‘s Matt Porter last week that he’d miss four weeks with a broken left leg.
All this in the middle of Glades Day’s hunt for a playoff spot out of District 7-1B. The Gators play Deerfield-Zion Lutheran on Friday. It’s a simple concept for Glades Day: Win and it’s in. But with two stars missing, there’s an added element of drama.

At first, everything went according to plan. Glades Day ground out a 24-12 win over Twiggs County (Ga.) in Daytona Beach. Taylor, who had offseason knee surgery, played and looked as close to full health as he had all offseason.
Then the Gators slipped up. Twice.
