Football: Benjamin, Pope John Paul II, St. Andrew’s, other small schools create independent conference

Benjamin, Pope John Paul II, John Carroll and St. Andrew’s are among 14 schools in Palm Beach, Broward and Miami-Dade Counties who have withdrawn from their FHSAA-mandated football districts to create an independent conference.

The move is expected to be announced Tuesday.

The conference, tentatively known as the South Florida Football Conference, will begin play in Sept. 2012 with North and South Divisions competing for an independent conference championship. [More]

Twenty area individuals, three relays advance to states from 2A-Region 4

From the Class 2A-Region 4 meet that took place on Wednesday, 20 individuals and three relay teams advanced to next Saturday’s Class 2A state meet in Winter Park.

Regional title winners were Jessica Ramsey of Boynton Beach in the shot put, Laquasha Graham of Pahokee in the long jump, Stephanie Schappert of Pope John Paul II in the 800 and 1600, and Ed Mulder of St. Andrew’s in the 3200.


Pope John Paul II hires former Miami Dolphins and Notre Dame player Autry Denson

Autry Denson, who left Notre Dame as the school’s all-time leading rusher, is the new head football coach at Pope John Paul II. Denson played four seasons in the NFL.
