Former Benjamin football player Sam Faria’s trial to start May 24

EDITOR’S NOTE: The charges against former Benjamin School student-athlete Sam Faria were reduced from felony battery and adjudication was withheld after he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor battery in June 2010. Faria was sentenced to community service for the charges related to a 2009 incident with an assistant football coach.

Sam Faria, a former Benjamin football player, is scheduled to begin his trial May 24th, the State Attorney’s Office said. He is accused of punching former assistant coach Thomas Flynn in the face and breaking his nose.

Sam Faria, the Benjamin football player who allegedly punched an assistant coach in the face and broke his nose, is scheduled to stand trial March 15.

Illness forces Benjamin to cancel game at American Heritage

The game between Benjamin and American Heritage has been cancelled after more than half of Benjamin’s team fell ill with the flu this week. The cancellation will result in a forfeit win for American Heritage.

Both teams had agreed to postpone today’s game at American Heritage to Monday at 7 p.m. but Benjamin coach Ron Ream said they would make a final decision on the makeup game today.

“They don’t know how many will be back Monday and it’s a district week (next week) for us so they agreed to forfeit,” American Heritage coach Willie Bueno said.

Benjamin player who allegedly struck coach arrested

Palm Beach Gardens police arrested the Benjamin football player who allegedly punched a volunteer assistant coach in the face during a game. The player, who is a minor, was taken into custody on aggravated battery charges Monday night.
