Playoff Primer 2010: Can Fort Pierce Westwood make a Class 3A run?

There are 18 playoff games across every class involving teams from our area. This week, Matt and I will break down every matchup.

Let’s head north and survey Fort Pierce Westwood’s first-round matchup against Southwest Ranches-Archbishop McCarthy. Westwood made waves this year with its stifling defense, strong offensive and defensive lines and the playmaking ability of QB Travares Copeland and do-everything athlete Wonderful Terry. The Panthers have a good shot at making a run, so let’s break down their first challenge.

Undefeated Fort Pierce teams meet for marquee matchup

TCPalm writer Laurel Pfahler wrote that this week’s Fort Pierce Westwood (8-0) vs. Fort Pierce Central (8-0) showdown might be “the biggest matchup in area history.”

St. Lucie County athletic director Jay Stewart told Pfahler that he expects “at least double” the usual 2,000 fans that come to watch Showdown 31.

The stage is set. The marquee is bright. The headlines are bold. And the game will be jam-packed with talent at almost every position.

Here’s what you need to know about Friday’s game, which kicks off at 7 p.m. up at Lawnwood Stadium in Fort Pierce.
